Amravati is the divisional headquarters of the Amravati Division and one of Vidarbha's most important cities — a city with deep cultural significance as the home of the goddess Ambadevi (from whose name Amravati derives), an important educational centre and a major commercial hub for the cotton, soyabean and orange farming region of the Amravati district. The Ambadevi temple gives the city its spiritual identity and draws devotees throughout the year.

Amravati is also known as the birthplace of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak — one of the greatest leaders of Bharat's independence movement, the first to use mass mobilisation of the people as a tool of nationalist politics.
