📍 About this Locality

Dhar is the headquarters of Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh, a historic town in the Malwa region that was the capital of the Paramara dynasty. The most celebrated Paramara king, Raja Bhoja (1010-1060 CE), was a polymath of extraordinary range who wrote on philosophy, astronomy, yoga, poetics, architecture and grammar, and whose patronage of learning made Dhar one of the most significant centres of Sanskrit scholarship in medieval Bharat. The Bhojshala, a medieval monument that served as both a Sanskrit learning centre and mosque, is one of the most historically complex sites in central India.

Raja Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty was one of the most remarkable figures in Indian intellectual history. His works encompass nearly every branch of Sanskrit learning. The Bhojshala complex, built during his reign, originally housed a Sanskrit centre dedicated to Saraswati and represents the height of Paramara cultural patronage.

Mandu, the extraordinary medieval hill fort accessible from Dhar, is most atmospheric in the monsoon (July-September) when the surrounding valleys fill with mist and waterfalls. The post-monsoon October-February season is most pleasant. Navratri, Diwali and the tribal festivals of the Bhil community are important seasonal events.
