Mandsaur is the headquarters of Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, a city known for the licensed opium poppy cultivation in the district under government licence for pharmaceutical use. The district is a significant producer of coriander, garlic and wheat. Mandsaur also contains the Pashupatinath temple complex with a remarkable 8th century CE Siva Linga of eight faces, and the ancient site of Dashpur mentioned in the Gupta period, making the area significant for ancient history scholars.

Mandsaur (ancient Dashpur) was an important city in the Gupta period. The Pashupatinath temple with its extraordinary 8th century CE Shiva linga known as the Ashta-Mukha-Linga (eight-faced) is one of the rarest Shaiva icons in Bharat. The region ancient heritage speaks to its importance in the Gupta and post-Gupta periods.
