Morena is the headquarters of Morena district in the Gwalior-Chambal division of Madhya Pradesh, a city on the Chambal river known for the famous Morena Gajak (a sesame and jaggery sweet that is one of the most celebrated winter sweets of North India) and as the commercial hub of the Chambal region. The Chambal river valley around Morena is known for its ravine landscape, the National Chambal Sanctuary protecting gharial crocodiles, Gangetic river dolphins and other wildlife, and the district has worked to transform from its historical association with dacoity into productive agriculture and wildlife conservation.

The Gajak production season runs October-February when the sesame and jaggery harvest allows making of this winter sweet. The mustard harvest (February-March) fills the Chambal valley with yellow fields. The National Chambal Sanctuary is best visited October-March. Navratri and Diwali are major community festivals.
