Durg is one of Chhattisgarh's most important industrial cities, part of the Bhilai-Durg urban agglomeration that forms the industrial heartland of the state. The city sits on the Sheonath river and serves as the district headquarters for Durg district, a major commercial and administrative centre for the surrounding region. Durg's identity is closely tied to the Bhilai Steel Plant, one of Bharat's largest and most iconic steel plants established in 1955 with Soviet collaboration, which transformed the entire region from an agricultural zone into a major industrial corridor. The twin cities of Bhilai and Durg together form one of central Bharat's most significant urban-industrial centres, producing steel that has built bridges, railways and infrastructure across the country.
The establishment of the Bhilai Steel Plant in 1955, one of the three steel plants set up in Nehru's second Five Year Plan with Soviet technical collaboration, transformed the Durg-Bhilai region from a quiet rural area into one of Bharat's premier industrial centres. The plant and the planned township of Bhilai became a model of the mixed economy development vision of independent Bharat.
Durg railway station is a major junction on the Howrah-Mumbai main line. NH-53 and NH-130 road connectivity. Approximately 30 km from Raipur, the state capital. Raipur Airport is the nearest air access.
The monsoon season (June-September) brings welcome rainfall to Durg and the Sheonath river fills significantly. Navratri (September-October) is celebrated with great enthusiasm in this central Indian city with Durga Devi worship at local temples drawing large numbers. Diwali and Holi are the major festivals. The post-monsoon October-February season is the most pleasant climatically. Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava (1 November) marking the formation of the state is observed with civic pride.
