📜 Historical Roots

Jagdalpur was the capital of the Bastar princely state, ruled by the Kakatiya-descended Bastar Rajas whose dynasty maintained cultural and administrative continuity in this forested region for centuries. The Bastar royal family's patronage of the Danteshwari goddess and the Bastar Dussehra festival created a cultural tradition of extraordinary richness that continues to be celebrated today.

The Bastar Dussehra (September-October) is the most spectacular cultural event of the year, lasting 75 days and centred on the worship of Devi Danteshwari. The monsoon (June-September) makes the Chitrakote Falls most spectacular at full flow. Tribal weekly markets (haats) run throughout the year and are most vibrant in the post-monsoon season. The Goncha festival of the Maria tribe, the Karma festival and the Hareli festival mark the tribal calendar.
