Raigarh is the headquarters of Raigarh district in eastern Chhattisgarh, a city known for its rich cultural heritage in classical and folk music, particularly the Raigarh Gharana of Kathak dance which was patronised by the enlightened maharaja Chakradhar Singh in the early 20th century. Chakradhar Singh was one of independent Bharat's most remarkable royal patrons of the arts, who invited classical musicians, dancers and scholars to his court and created a unique cultural environment in this small city. The Chakradhar Samaroha, an annual cultural festival held in Raigarh, honours this heritage and draws classical performers from across Bharat. The city also has a growing industrial base with steel and power plants.

📜 Historical Roots

Maharaja Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh (1905-1947) was one of the most exceptional royal patrons of classical arts in modern Bharat. His deep scholarship in music and dance, his notation of thousands of musical compositions and his patronage of the Raigarh Gharana of Kathak created a cultural legacy that makes this small city disproportionately significant in the history of Bharat's classical arts.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Chakradhar Samaroha classical arts festival, held annually in October-November, is the cultural highlight of Raigarh's year drawing classical musicians and Kathak dancers from across the country. Navratri (September-October) is the major community festival. The monsoon fills the Kelom river and the surrounding agricultural landscape turns green. Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava (1 November) coincides with the festival season.
