Ambikapur is the headquarters of Surguja district in northern Chhattisgarh, a city in the forested plateau region near the Jharkhand border known for its pleasant climate (one of the coolest cities in Chhattisgarh), the Surguja tribal heritage and the remarkable Mainpat plateau (called the Shimla of Chhattisgarh) nearby. Ambikapur has gained national recognition as one of Bharat's cleanest cities, consistently ranking highly in the Swachh Bharat survey rankings. The city and the surrounding Surguja district are home to the Oraon, Kanwar and other tribal communities whose cultural traditions add to the rich heritage of northern Chhattisgarh.

📜 Historical Roots

Surguja was the seat of the Surguja princely state, one of the tribal states of central India whose rulers maintained a degree of autonomy within the broader political frameworks of successive periods. The Oraon community's cultural traditions, their Sarna religious practices and their agricultural heritage form an important part of the historical fabric of this region.

The monsoon (June-September) makes Ambikapur and the surrounding Surguja plateau particularly scenic. The Mainpat plateau is most beautiful in the monsoon and post-monsoon season. Navratri (September-October) and tribal festivals including the Karma festival (Bhadra month) are the most significant celebrations. The Chhattisgarh Tribal Festival and Rajyotsava (1 November) are important civic events.
