Karimnagar is one of Telangana's most important cities β the headquarters of Karimnagar district, a major urban centre of north Telangana and a city with genuine economic depth encompassing steel fabrication, the famous Karimnagar silver filigree craft, agricultural trade and a strong institutional base of colleges and hospitals. The city sits on the banks of the Manair river, a tributary of the Godavari.
Karimnagar's identity is inseparable from its silver filigree work β the delicate, intricate craft in which local artisans create jewellery and decorative items that are recognised across Bharat and internationally. This craft tradition is a living cultural heritage that continues to employ skilled artisans in the city. Karimnagar is also known for its granite stone industry and is one of the major cities in Telangana's Godavari belt.
Karimnagar has ancient connections β Elgandal fort, overlooking the Manair river, dates to medieval Kakatiya-era fortifications. The region was an important part of the Kakatiya kingdom and subsequent Deccan sultanate territories before becoming part of Hyderabad State. The silver filigree craft has been practised here for centuries.
Karimnagar railway station on the SecunderabadβPeddapalli line. NH-163 connects to Hyderabad (160 km) and Jagitial. TSRTC major bus depot with extensive services.
Karimnagar's festival calendar is rich β Bonalu during Shravan at historic temples, Bathukamma in September-October (celebrated with particular enthusiasm in this culturally proud city), Sankranti in January as a harvest festival, and Ram Navami at the region's Rama temples. The silver filigree craft sees peak demand during the October-December wedding and festival season. The Manair river is most scenic during the monsoon months of July-September.
