Hanamkonda is the twin city of Warangal and a major urban centre in its own right — home to the magnificent Thousand Pillar Temple (Sri Rudreshwara Swamy), one of the Kakatiya dynasty's finest surviving architectural achievements. Hanamkonda and Warangal together form a conurbation that is Telangana's second-largest urban agglomeration.

The city is the headquarters of Hanamkonda district (separated from Warangal Urban district in 2021) and serves a dense population as a commercial, educational and cultural centre. Hanamkonda's markets, particularly for agricultural produce and textiles, serve a wide hinterland. The Bhadrakali temple at Hanamkonda is one of the most important goddess shrines in Telangana.

Hanamkonda was the original capital location of the Kakatiya rulers before Warangal fort was fully developed — the Thousand Pillar Temple built by King Rudradeva in 1163 CE stands as testament to the architectural vision of this great Telugu dynasty at the height of its power.

Hanamkonda's Bhadrakali temple is at its most spiritually active during Navratri (September-October) and Bonalu during Shravan — these are the most significant devotional periods for this important shakti shrine. Bathukamma in September-October sees women celebrating Telangana's floral festival with deep cultural engagement. The Thousand Pillar Temple is most visited during the post-monsoon October-February pleasant season. Sankranti in January marks the harvest celebration.
