Khammam is one of Telangana's larger and more significant district cities — a major commercial, agricultural and educational hub in the southern part of the state, close to the Andhra Pradesh border and served by the important Vijayawada–Hyderabad railway line. The city has a well-developed civic infrastructure: medical colleges, engineering colleges, an active commercial district and the agricultural market infrastructure that makes it the trading centre for a rich agricultural region.
Khammam district is known for its coal resources (SCCL mines in the north), fertile agricultural land producing paddy and cotton, and significant forest areas in the east. The Khammam Fort, though partially in ruins, stands as a monument to the city's historical importance. The city's strategic location at the crossroads of multiple travel corridors gives it commercial significance.
Khammam Fort was built by the Kakatiyas and later occupied by the Qutb Shahis and Mughals, reflecting the city's strategic importance as a crossroads of the Deccan. The region was part of Hyderabad State and was a significant zone of the Naxalite movement in post-independence Bharat.
Khammam railway station on the Vijayawada–Secunderabad main line. NH-163 and NH-30 provide road connectivity to Hyderabad and Vijayawada. TSRTC major hub.
Khammam's paddy and cotton cultivation follow the kharif cycle (June-October). Bonalu during Shravan and Bathukamma in September-October are significant community festivals. The Khammam Fort area is most visited during the post-monsoon pleasant season of October-February. Sankranti in January is the harvest festival. The city's educational institutions activate the local calendar in June-July. The Godavari tributaries are most scenic during the monsoon months.
