About this locality

Kothagudem is the headquarters of Bhadradri Kothagudem district and one of Telangana's most distinctive cities — shaped almost entirely by the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), one of Bharat's largest coal mining enterprises. The city and the surrounding areas are home to the mining workforce — engineers, miners, maintenance staff and their families — who have created a unique mining township culture over generations.

Beyond coal, Kothagudem is notable for its proximity to the Bhadrachalam area (in the adjacent mandal) with the celebrated Sri Rama temple on the banks of the Godavari, and for the forested tribal landscape of the Bhadradri hills. Kothagudem's identity is defined by the development of the Godavari coalfields by the Singareni Collieries, whose operations began in the late 19th century and expanded significantly after independence to become a major pillar of Bharat's energy economy.
