Kadapa, the authentic Telugu name for the district headquarters formerly anglicised as Cuddapah, is an important city of the Rayalaseema region in southern Andhra Pradesh. The city sits on the Penna river and is surrounded by the Erramalai (Red Hills) and Nallamala ranges, giving it a distinctive landscape of red soil, rocky hillsides and the river valley that supports agriculture in this otherwise semi-arid terrain. Kadapa district is significant for its mineral wealth. It contains one of the world's largest deposits of barytes (barium sulphate) and significant uranium ore deposits, making it a district of national economic importance for the mining sector.
