Nandyal is the headquarters of Nandyal district, a newly formed district in the Rayalaseema region carved from Kurnool district, a commercial town on the Kunderu river known for its position at the base of the Eastern Ghats and as a gateway to the Nallamala forest region. The town serves an agricultural hinterland producing groundnuts, cotton and vegetables on the red soils of the Rayalaseema plateau. Nandyal has a growing commercial character with markets, educational institutions and the administrative infrastructure of a district headquarters. The area around Nandyal includes the Srisailam Tiger Reserve forested zones and the scenic Nallamala hills that provide a dramatic natural backdrop.

Sankranti in January is the harvest festival. The Srisailam pilgrimage sees high traffic during Shivaratri and Shravan month. Groundnut harvest runs October-December.
