📍 About this Locality

Machilipatnam, also known as Masulipatnam or Bandar, is one of the oldest port cities on the Coromandel Coast, a historic trading city whose name means City of Fish and whose harbour was among the earliest points of contact between Bharat and European maritime traders. The Dutch, English and French East India Companies all established trading posts here, making it one of the most significant ports in 17th and 18th century Bharat. Today Machilipatnam is the headquarters of Krishna district, a coastal city known for the Machilipatnam Kalamkari textile printing tradition and the fresh seafood of the Bay of Bengal coast.

📜 Historical Roots

Machilipatnam was one of Bharat's most important trading ports in the 17th and 18th centuries. The English East India Company's first factory on the Coromandel Coast was established here in 1611. Before European contact, the port was a major node in the Indian Ocean trading network connecting the Deccan's textile production to Southeast Asia, West Asia and East Africa.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Bay of Bengal monsoon (June-September) brings rough seas and cyclone risk to the Machilipatnam coast. The fishing community observes the traditional monsoon fishing ban during the peak season. The post-monsoon October-February season is the most active for fishing. Ugadi (March-April) is the Telugu new year. The Kalamkari market is most active during the festival season October-December.
