Rajahmundry, more completely and authentically called Rajamahendravaram, is one of the most culturally significant cities in the Telugu world, known as the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh. The city is revered as the birthplace of the Telugu literary renaissance. The great poet Nannaya, who began the translation of the Mahabharata into Telugu in the 11th century CE, did his transformative work here under the patronage of the Eastern Chalukya king Rajaraja Narendra. Rajahmundry sits on the Godavari river at a point of great natural beauty. The river here is broad and majestic, and the Godavari Pushkaram draws millions of pilgrims to the ghats. 📜 Historical Roots

Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram) was the capital of the Eastern Chalukya kings whose patronage created the foundations of Telugu literature. The great Nannaya began his Andhra Mahabharatam here, a work that established the literary forms, vocabulary and cultural framework of Telugu letters for a millennium. The city's name honours Rajaraja Narendra, the Eastern Chalukya king who commissioned this epochal work.
