📍 About this Locality

Nanjangud is a significant pilgrimage and industrial town in Mysuru district, known as the Dakshina Kashi (Varanasi of the South) for the Srikanteshwara (Nanjundeshwara) temple on the banks of the Kapila river, one of the most important Shiva temples in Karnataka. The temple's towering gopuram, the sacred Kapila river ghats and the town's deeply devotional character attract lakhs of pilgrims from across Karnataka throughout the year. Nanjangud is also known for the Mysore Soap Factory at Nanjangud and the town's industrial estates that produce pharmaceuticals and consumer goods.

📜 Historical Roots

The Nanjundeshwara temple is one of Karnataka's most ancient and venerated Shiva shrines, with documented history from at least the 12th century CE and associations with the Hoysala kingdom. The Kapila river, on whose banks the temple stands, is considered sacred in the region. The temple's architectural heritage reflects the Mysore Kingdom's patronage and the Vijayanagara style of Dravidian temple art.

🌿 Seasonal Context

Maha Shivaratri (February-March) is the most important festival at the Srikanteshwara temple, drawing lakhs of pilgrims for the all-night vigil. Shravan month (July-August) sees heightened pilgrimage. Dasara (October) is celebrated with the Mysuru regional traditions. The Nanjangud Rasabale banana is harvested through the year with seasonal peaks.
