Udupi is one of the most spiritually and culturally significant towns in South Bharat, the seat of the Sri Krishna Matha established by the great philosopher-saint Sri Madhvacharya in the 13th century CE, one of the most important centres of Dvaita Vedanta philosophy. The Sri Krishna temple at Udupi is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Karnataka, known for the uniquely positioned idol of Sri Krishna that can only be seen through a small window (the Kanakana Kindi, associated with the bhakti saint Kanakadasa). Udupi is also the birthplace of the Udupi cuisine tradition, one of the most beloved and widespread vegetarian food traditions in Bharat, whose restaurants have spread to every corner of the country.
Sri Madhvacharya (1238-1317 CE), born near Udupi, was one of the three great Acharyas (along with Adi Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya) who shaped the philosophical traditions of Hinduism. His Dvaita Vedanta philosophy, establishing the eternal difference between God and the individual soul, created a theological tradition that continues to be followed by millions. The eight monasteries (Ashta Mathas) he established at Udupi continue to administer the Sri Krishna temple in rotation.

The Paryaya ceremony at Udupi, in which the Swami of one of the eight Ashta Mathas takes over administration of the Sri Krishna temple every two years, is one of Karnataka's most significant religious events. Janmashtami (August) at the Sri Krishna Matha is one of the most authentic and spiritually charged celebrations in Bharat. The coastal Udupi region receives extraordinary monsoon rainfall (June-September).
