Hubballi is the commercial capital of North Karnataka and the second largest city in the state, the commercial twin of Dharwad in the Hubballi-Dharwad twin city agglomeration. Hubballi is known as the Manchester of Karnataka for its cotton trade and textile activity, as a major railway junction (the South Western Railway zonal headquarters is at Hubballi), and as a rapidly growing commercial and industrial centre with one of Bharat's most active commodity markets. The city has a strong trading community of Marwari, Lingayat and other merchant communities who have built it into North Karnataka's dominant commercial hub.

Hubballi's commercial importance grew with the development of the railway network in the 19th century when it became a major junction connecting Mumbai, Bengaluru and Goa. The city's trading communities, particularly the Lingayat and Marwari merchants, developed Hubballi into the dominant commercial centre of North Karnataka, a position it maintains despite the development of other regional cities.
