Gadag is the headquarters of Gadag district in North Karnataka, a city known for its extraordinary Chalukyan and Hoysala temples, particularly the Trikuteshwara temple complex at Gadag-Betageri, which represents some of the finest medieval Deccan temple architecture in Bharat. The Trikuteshwara temple, with its three shrines and intricately carved exterior, is one of the most important examples of the late Chalukyan Kalyani style of temple architecture. The Saraswati temple at Gadag, with its magnificent library of Kannada manuscripts, was historically significant as a centre of learning. Gadag is also known as the hub of the North Karnataka folk art tradition of Doddata.

Gadag was an important centre of the Western Chalukya (Kalyani Chalukya) kingdom from the 10th to 12th centuries CE. The Trikuteshwara temple complex, built during this period, represents the artistic and architectural achievement of this dynasty at its height. The Saraswati temple's collection of palm leaf manuscripts speaks to Gadag's role as a centre of Kannada literary scholarship.
