Hampi is one of the most extraordinary heritage sites in all of Bharat, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire whose ruins spread across a surreal landscape of giant granite boulders, the Tungabhadra river and temple complexes of breathtaking scale and artistry. The Virupaksha temple, the Vittala temple with its famous stone chariot and musical pillars, the Lotus Mahal, the elephant stables and the royal enclosure are among the hundreds of monuments that make Hampi one of Asia most important archaeological landscapes. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, Hampi draws visitors from across Bharat and the world who come to experience one of history most powerful evocations of a lost civilisation.
Vijayanagara, whose capital at Hampi was one of the largest cities in the world in the 15th and 16th centuries, was the last great Hindu empire of medieval Bharat. Under Krishnadevaraya (1509-1529 CE), the empire reached its greatest extent and cultural brilliance. The city destruction by the Deccan Sultanates in 1565 CE ended one of the most glorious chapters in South Bharat civilisational history.
Hosapete Junction railway station 13 km away. Road connectivity from Hosapete and Ballari. Hampi has restricted vehicle access within the heritage zone. Nearest airport is Hubli approximately 165 km.
The Hampi Utsav (November) is the most spectacular cultural event with classical performances set against illuminated monuments. The post-monsoon October-February season is ideal for exploration. The Tungabhadra river at Hampi is most scenic during and after the monsoon. The Virupaksha temple chariot festival (Rathotsava, February-March) is a major devotional event.
