Kalaburagi, formerly known as Gulbarga, is the headquarters of Kalaburagi district and the most significant city of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, integrated into Karnataka only in 1956. The city is known for the Gulbarga Fort and the remarkable Jama Masjid within it, built in the 14th century CE with its entire courtyard covered by a roof of 75 domes, modelled after the mosque at Cordoba in Spain. The Dargah of Hazrat Gesu Daraz (Banda Nawaz), one of the most revered Sufi shrines in South Bharat, is the city most important spiritual landmark.

📜 Historical Roots

Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) was the first capital of the Bahmani Sultanate, the first independent Muslim kingdom of the Deccan, founded in 1347 CE. The city architectural heritage from this period represents a unique chapter in Indian Islamic architecture that synthesised Persian, Turkish and local Deccan traditions.
