Belagavi is one of Karnataka's most important cities, the second capital of Karnataka where the winter session of the Karnataka Legislature is held. The city is located in the Western Ghats foothills near the Maharashtra and Goa borders, giving it a composite Kannada-Marathi cultural identity. The Belagavi Fort, one of Karnataka's finest medieval forts, and the Kamala Basti Jain temple within it are important heritage sites. The city is the headquarters of Belagavi district and a significant educational and commercial centre.

📜 Historical Roots

Belagavi has ancient roots and was an important centre under various Deccan powers including the Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and later the Bahmani and Adil Shahi Sultanates. The Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, the magnificent new legislature building built in 2005, houses the winter session of the Karnataka assembly.

The Karnataka Legislature winter session (December) makes Belagavi the administrative focus of the state annually. Ugadi (March-April) and Rajyotsava (1 November) are major Karnataka festivals. The post-monsoon October-February season brings a pleasant cool climate. The sugarcane harvest season (November-April) is economically significant.
