📍 About this Locality

Gokak is a town in Belagavi district known for the spectacular Gokak Falls, where the Ghataprabha river plunges 52 metres in a dramatic horseshoe-shaped waterfall that is one of Karnataka most impressive natural sites. The town is also known for its textile industry and the Gokak Mills, one of the oldest textile mills in Karnataka. The Gokak agitation of 1982 was a significant movement for Kannada language rights led by Dr. Rajkumar that brought the issue of Kannada language status to national attention.

📜 Historical Roots

The Gokak agitation of 1982, in which the Kannada film industry and cultural organisations mobilised for the implementation of the Gokak Committee report on Kannada language status in education, was one of the most significant Kannada cultural movements of the 20th century led by Dr. Rajkumar.

The Gokak Falls are most spectacular during and immediately after the monsoon (July-October) when the Ghataprabha river carries its maximum flow. The post-monsoon season is most pleasant for visits. Ugadi and Rajyotsava are major community festivals. The textile mills operate year-round.
