📍 About this Locality

Tiruvannamalai is one of the most sacred places in the Shaiva world, the temple town at the foot of the holy Arunachala hill where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Arunachaleswarar in the element of fire (Agni), one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas. The Arunachaleswarar temple is one of the largest temple complexes in Bharat. The Girivalam, the 14 km barefoot circumambulation of Arunachala hill performed by lakhs of devotees every full moon night, is one of the most moving devotional practices in Hindu Bharat. The Sri Ramana Maharshi ashram draws spiritual seekers from across the world.

📜 Historical Roots

The Arunachala hill has been sacred for millennia, celebrated in Tevaram hymns and expanded by Chola, Vijayanagara and Nayaka patronage into one of the greatest temple complexes in Bharat. Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950), who arrived as a young man and never left the hill, became one of the most universally revered spiritual figures of modern times.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Karthigai Deepam festival (November-December) draws over a million pilgrims when a giant flame of ghee is lit atop Arunachala. Every full moon night sees lakhs performing the Girivalam. Maha Shivaratri (February-March) is a major observance.
