📍 About this Locality

Nagapattinam is the headquarters of Nagapattinam district, a historic port on the Coromandel coast that was one of the great maritime gateways of the Chola empire from which the navy sailed on expeditions to Srivijaya (Southeast Asia). The town is a centre of remarkable religious confluence: the Kayarohanaswami Shiva temple, the Nagore Dargah of Hazrat Shahul Hamid (one of South Bharat most revered Sufi shrines drawing devotees of all faiths), and the Velankanni Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health (the Lourdes of the East) all within a small coastal stretch.

📜 Historical Roots

Nagapattinam was the premier port of the Chola empire from which Rajendra Chola expeditions to Southeast Asia sailed in the 11th century. The port later hosted Portuguese and Dutch settlements. The district fishing communities bore heavy losses in the 2004 tsunami.

The Nagore Dargah Kandhuri festival draws lakhs of devotees of all faiths. The Velankanni feast (September) brings millions of pilgrims to the basilica. The northeast monsoon (October-December) is the rainy and cyclone-risk season.
