📍 About this Locality

Thanjavur is the cultural capital of the Tamil country and the seat of the Chola empire at its height, home to the Brihadeeswarar temple (the Big Temple), the supreme masterpiece of Chola architecture built by Rajaraja Chola I in 1010 CE and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple 66-metre vimana is one of the greatest buildings ever raised in Bharat. Thanjavur is the fountainhead of the classical Tamil arts: Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, Thanjavur painting (GI tagged), the veena-making tradition and the Saraswathi Mahal Library all flourished here under successive royal patronage.

Pongal (January) in the delta capital is the definitive celebration of the Tamil agrarian year. The Thyagaraja Aradhana at nearby Thiruvaiyaru (January) is the most sacred event of the Carnatic music calendar.
