Musiri is a town in Tiruchirappalli district on the northern bank of the Cauvery, an agricultural market centre for the banana, paddy and coconut cultivation of the river belt. The town name resonates in Carnatic music history through Musiri Subramania Iyer, one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century, whose emotionally profound style influenced generations of the Carnatic tradition.
Musiri Subramania Iyer (1899-1975), who bore the town name, became one of the most revered Carnatic vocalists of his era and later principal of the Central College of Carnatic Music in Chennai.
Musiri is on the Trichy-Namakkal road (NH-381) approximately 30 km from Tiruchirappalli. Nearest major railway station is Tiruchirappalli.
Pongal (January) is the major agrarian festival. The banana cultivation runs year-round with market peaks before festivals. Aadi Perukku (July-August) celebrates the river rising, observed on the Cauvery banks.
