📍 About this Locality

Dindigul is the headquarters of Dindigul district, a city at the base of the dramatic Dindigul rock fort famous across Bharat for two things: the Dindigul lock industry (GI tagged handmade locks synonymous with security for two centuries); and Dindigul biryani (the distinctive seeraga samba rice biryani that has become one of Tamil Nadu most celebrated culinary exports with restaurant chains carrying the town name across the world). The city is also a major leather and tannery industry hub and the gateway to Kodaikanal.

📜 Historical Roots

The Dindigul rock fort, a massive granite outcrop fortified from the Nayaka period, was contested by Hyder Ali (who served as its commandant early in his career), the Marathas and the British. The lock-making craft developed in the 19th century as the town smiths built a reputation for unpickable handmade locks.
