Madurai is the soul of the Tamil country, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, the city of the Meenakshi Amman temple whose fourteen towering gopurams covered in thousands of painted deities form one of the supreme achievements of Dravidian architecture. The Sangam academies of classical Tamil literature were held here two millennia ago, making Madurai the mother city of Tamil culture. 📜 Historical Roots

Madurai history spans over 2,500 years: capital of the Pandya kingdom celebrated by Greek and Roman visitors, seat of the Tamil Sangam academies codifying classical Tamil literature, and the stage for the sacred marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. The Nayaka rulers rebuilt the temple complex to its present glory in the 16th-17th centuries.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Chithirai festival (April-May) draws over a million people for the celestial wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar in one of Bharat greatest festival spectacles. The Float Festival (January-February) on the Mariamman Teppakulam is magical. Pongal (January) is celebrated in classic southern style.
