📍 About this Locality

Theni is the headquarters of Theni district in the Western Ghats foothills, the centre of one of the state most productive agricultural belts where the Cumbum valley (the grape valley of South Bharat) produces table grapes year-round alongside cardamom, banana, mango and the cotton of the rain-shadow plains. The Periyar dam waters flowing east through the mountains irrigate this valley under an 1895 transboundary engineering arrangement. The Meghamalai cloud forests and the Vaigai dam are the district natural landmarks.

📜 Historical Roots

The Cumbum valley agricultural prosperity was transformed by the Periyar diversion of 1895, when the Mullaperiyar dam turned Kerala-bound waters eastward through a mountain tunnel into the Vaigai basin, one of the boldest engineering projects of its era. The valley grape cultivation introduced in the 20th century found ideal conditions in the rain-shadow climate.

Theni connected by NH-85 toward Kerala border and state highways to Madurai (75 km). Nearest railhead is Theni station on the Madurai branch. Madurai Airport is the air gateway.

The grape harvest runs nearly year-round with multiple pruning cycles. The cardamom season peaks August-January. Pongal (January) is the major agrarian festival. The Meghamalai and hill areas are most scenic post-monsoon.
