Vellore is the headquarters of Vellore district, built around the magnificent 16th century Vellore Fort (among the finest examples of military architecture in South Bharat with its granite ramparts and wide moat) containing the exquisite Jalakandeswarar temple. The city global reputation rests on the Christian Medical College (CMC Vellore, one of Asia finest medical institutions, founded by Dr. Ida Scudder in 1900) and VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology). The Vellore Mutiny of 1806, the first major uprising of Indian sepoys against the East India Company predating 1857 by fifty years, gives the fort a foundational place in the freedom struggle memory.

📜 Historical Roots

The Vellore Fort, built under Vijayanagara in the 16th century, witnessed the Vellore Mutiny of 10 July 1806 when Indian sepoys rose against Company regulations offending religious practice, the first large-scale military uprising against British rule. Dr. Ida Scudder founded CMC in 1900 from a one-bed clinic growing into one of the world great mission hospitals.
