📍 About this Locality
Arani is a significant silk-weaving town in Tiruvannamalai district, one of the principal centres of the Tamil silk saree industry alongside Kanchipuram. Its thousands of looms produce the lighter Arani pattu silk sarees favoured for daily and festive wear across Tamil Nadu. The town is also a rice trading centre for the surrounding paddy belt, and the Arani weaving community sustains one of the state great handloom concentrations.

Arani silk tradition grew alongside the Kanchipuram industry, the town weavers specialising in lighter silk weights making silk wearable beyond weddings. The weaving communities organised through cooperative societies from the mid-20th century sustained the craft through market transformations.
