Salem is one of Tamil Nadu major cities, the headquarters of Salem district, ringed by hills with the Shevaroys from which Yercaud hill town looks down on the city. Salem is the sago-tapioca capital of Bharat, a major powerloom and textile centre and home to the Salem Steel Plant famous for stainless steel. Salem mangoes and the silver anklet craft carry the city name and the district mineral wealth (magnesite, bauxite) supports its industrial base.

📜 Historical Roots
Salem sits in an ancient landscape at the junction of the Kongu and northern Tamil countries. The post-independence steel plant and the sago industry (built on tapioca introduced from Kerala) diversified the city into the industrial powerhouse of west-central Tamil Nadu.

Salem Junction is a major railway hub where Chennai-Coimbatore and Bengaluru-Madurai corridors cross. Salem Airport has limited services. NH-44 and NH-544 converge. Approximately 340 km from Chennai.
