📍 About this Locality

Karur is the headquarters of Karur district on the banks of the Amaravathi river, one of the oldest urban centres of the Tamil country (the ancient Karuvur of Sangam literature and the Chera capital of classical antiquity, yielding Roman coins and amphorae attesting Indo-Roman trade two millennia ago) and today the home textile capital of Bharat. The Karur textile industry dominates the country production of home furnishings with exports to global retail chains. The bus body building industry is also nationally significant.

📜 Historical Roots

Karur (Karuvur) was the inland capital of the Chera dynasty in the Sangam age, a hub of the Roman trade whose excavations have yielded Roman coins, amphorae and gems. The modern home textile industry, built by local entrepreneurship from the mid-20th century, restored the town to global trade prominence.
