Kannur is the headquarters of Kannur district in northern Kerala, a city with a proud history of political organisation and trade unionism that earned it the title of Land of Looms and Lores (for its handloom industry and political culture). The city is one of Kerala's most significant centres of theyyam, the extraordinary ritual performance tradition of North Kerala in which deities take human form through elaborately costumed performers in village shrines, one of the most spectacular and spiritually charged performance traditions in Bharat. Kannur is also known for its cashew processing industry, coconut products and the St. Angelo Fort (Kannur Fort) built by the Portuguese in 1505, one of the oldest Portuguese forts on the Indian coast.
Kannur was one of the most important spice trading ports of the Malabar coast in the medieval period, a key node in the ancient pepper and cardamom trade that connected Kerala to the Arab world and beyond. The city's strong Communist party presence, rooted in the trade union movement among plantation and handloom workers, makes it one of the most politically distinctive cities in India's democratic tradition.
Kannur railway station on the Shoranur-Mangaluru line. Kannur Airport has domestic connectivity. NH-66 coastal road connectivity. Approximately 90 km from Kozhikode.
The theyyam season runs from October to May (the dry season after the monsoon) when the rituals are performed in the kavus (village shrines) across North Kerala, drawing devotees and cultural visitors from around the world. The Kerala monsoon (June-September) is the most dramatic season, when the Arabian Sea is at its most powerful. Vishu (April) marks the Kerala new year. Onam (August-September) is the most important harvest festival.
