Thalassery is a historic coastal town in Kannur district of Kerala, a place of extraordinary cultural significance as the birthplace of the Kerala circus tradition, the home of the famous Thalassery biryani (a distinct and beloved rice preparation using small-grained Kaima rice with local spices) and the site of one of the earliest pre-independence era trading posts in Malabar. The Thalassery Fort, built by the British East India Company in 1708, and the historic town centre with its characteristic Malabar architecture give the town a layered historical character. Thalassery is also celebrated for its unique cricket culture and was one of the first towns in Kerala to play the sport.
Thalassery (Tellicherry) was a significant pre-independence era trading post established to control the pepper and cardamom of the Wayanad hills behind the coast. The town's history as a pre-independence period trading post is balanced by its extraordinary cultural contributions, particularly the Kerala circus tradition which originated here in the late 19th century and the unique biryani tradition that developed from the Moplah (Mappila Muslim) culinary heritage.
Thalassery railway station on the Shoranur-Mangaluru line. NH-66 road connectivity. Approximately 20 km from Kannur.
Thalassery's food scene is most celebrated around Eid when the Thalassery biryani is prepared in its most traditional and elaborate forms. Theyyam season (October-May) sees performances in the surrounding rural areas. The Kerala monsoon (June-September) is dramatic on the Malabar coast. Onam (August-September) is the most important community festival.
