About this locality

Kozhikode — historically known as Calicut — is one of the most historically significant cities on the Malabar coast, the ancient capital of the Zamorin rulers whose port was the most important pepper and spice trading centre in Asia for centuries. It was at Kozhikode that Vasco da Gama first landed in 1498, an event that dramatically changed the course of world history by establishing direct sea trade between Europe and Asia. The city is the commercial capital of northern Kerala, known for its exceptional Malabar cuisine (particularly the Malabar parotta, biriyani and seafood dishes), the Calicut University, the beach and the distinctive Kozhikode halwa sweet that is one of Kerala's most beloved confections.

Historical roots

Kozhikode was the most powerful port city on the Malabar coast, whose Zamorin rulers controlled the Kerala pepper trade that was the most valuable commodity in medieval world commerce. The arrival of Vasco da Gama at Kozhikode in 1498 is one of the most consequential moments in world history, connecting Asia and Europe by sea and triggering the age of European maritime expansion. Kozhikode's historical identity as a great maritime trading city predates European arrival by many centuries.
