Thrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala, the headquarters of Thrissur district and the city that hosts the Thrissur Pooram, described as the mother of all poorams and one of the most spectacular temple festivals in the world. The Thrissur Pooram, held annually at the Vadakkumnathan temple, features two processions of caparisoned elephants from rival devaswom groups converging to compete in a display of parasols, percussion orchestras (panchari melam and chenda melam) and fireworks that has no parallel in scale or spectacle. Thrissur is also the headquarters of the Thrissur Diocese of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and a centre of Kerala's extraordinary Christian heritage.
Thrissur was the capital of Cochin State and has been a centre of cultural, religious and commercial life in central Kerala for centuries. The Thrissur Pooram festival was established by Raja Rama Varma (Sakthan Thampuran) in the 18th century, who reorganised the temple festival into its current spectacular format. The city's extraordinary religious diversity, with Hindu temples, Catholic and Orthodox churches, and mosques coexisting in the same urban space, makes it one of Bharat's most remarkable examples of inter-faith coexistence.
Thrissur railway station on the Shoranur-Ernakulam main line. NH-544 and NH-66 road connectivity. Approximately 75 km from Kochi and 80 km from Palakkad.
The Thrissur Pooram (April-May, Medam month) is the most spectacular annual event, drawing lakhs of visitors including international tourists for a night of fireworks, elephant processions and percussion orchestras that transforms the city. Onam (August-September) is the most important harvest festival. Vishu (April) marks the Kerala new year. Christmas is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the significant Christian community.
