Chalakudy is a town in Thrissur district of Kerala, known as the gateway to the Athirappilly Falls, one of the most spectacular and largest waterfalls in Kerala, and the Vazhachal Falls, set in the dense Sholayar forests of the Western Ghats. The Chalakudy river, one of Kerala's most pristine rivers, flows from the Sholayar hills through a landscape of extraordinary biodiversity. The river supports the largest diversity of freshwater fish species in the peninsular region. Chalakudy itself is an important commercial town serving the agricultural and timber economy of the surrounding region.
The Athirappilly-Vazhachal forest zone has been an ecologically significant area long recognised for its biodiversity. The Chalakudy river's extraordinary fish diversity, including several endemic species, makes it one of the most biologically significant river systems in South Bharat. Conservation efforts to protect the river and its associated forest ecosystem have made Chalakudy a centre of environmental awareness in Kerala.
Chalakudy railway station on the Shoranur-Ernakulam line. NH-544 road connectivity. Approximately 35 km from Thrissur and 55 km from Kochi. Athirappilly Falls is 35 km from Chalakudy.
The Athirappilly Falls are most spectacular during and immediately after the monsoon (June-September) when the full flow of the Chalakudy river creates a thundering curtain of water. The post-monsoon October-November season offers excellent conditions for visits and nature observation. Onam (August-September) is the most important community festival. The forest is most accessible in the dry season (November-May).
