Bitra is the smallest inhabited island of Lakshadweep, a tiny coral islet of barely a tenth of a square kilometre in the northern part of the archipelago, home to one of the smallest island communities in Bharat. The island sits within a large lagoon rich in marine life and its small community lives primarily from fishing and coconut cultivation. Bitra contains a small shrine to Malik Mulla, an Arab saint believed buried there. The island represents the extreme edge of inhabited Bharat, a community sustaining itself on a speck of coral in the Arabian Sea.
