📍 About this Locality

Kavaratti is the capital of Lakshadweep, Bharat's smallest Union Territory, an extraordinarily beautiful coral atoll island in the Arabian Sea where the lagoon waters are among the clearest and most turquoise in the world. The island is the administrative centre for this archipelago of 36 islands (of which only 10 are inhabited) scattered across the Arabian Sea west of Kerala. Kavaratti's population is almost entirely Muslim, descendants of Arab traders who arrived and settled on these islands centuries ago, maintaining a distinctive island cultural tradition with Malayalam as the primary language alongside Arabic religious practice. The coral reefs, the transparent lagoon, the marine biodiversity and the pristine beaches of Kavaratti make it one of Bharat's most coveted yet least visited natural paradises.

📜 Historical Roots

The Lakshadweep islands have been inhabited since ancient times and their Muslim community traces its origin to Arab traders and missionaries who arrived on the islands in the 7th century CE. The islands were part of the Cannanore Sultanate and later came under the Arakkal Bibi (the only Muslim queen in Kerala history) before pre-independence administration. The islands joined independent Bharat in 1956.

🚇 Connectivity

Air India and other carriers fly to Agatti Island (nearest airstrip, 65 km from Kavaratti). Ship services from Kochi (Beypore) operate regular routes. Internal boat services between islands. Kavaratti has no private vehicles permitted.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The ideal season for visiting Kavaratti and Lakshadweep is October to May when the Arabian Sea is calm and the lagoon is at its most accessible for water sports, snorkelling and diving. The southwest monsoon (June-September) brings rough seas that limit inter-island travel. Eid is the most significant community celebration on the islands. The coral reefs are most vibrant and visible in the calm winter months.
