Aluva is a major town in Ernakulam district of Kerala, situated on the Periyar river and one of the most important industrial and transit centres in the state. Aluva is the industrial satellite of Kochi, housing significant chemical and manufacturing industries including the Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) plant, one of Kerala's largest industrial undertakings. The Aluva Sivarathri festival on the banks of the Periyar is one of Kerala's most spectacular Shiva festivals, drawing lakhs of devotees who worship a natural swayambhu Shiva lingam that appears on the sand banks during the festival. The Aluva Metro station makes it a key interchange in the Kochi Metro network.

📜 Historical Roots

Aluva's Sivarathri festival has been observed for centuries, with the natural swayambhu lingam believed to emerge from the Periyar river sand during the festival. The FACT plant, established in the post-independence period, was among the pioneering industrial projects of Kerala and represents the state's industrial heritage. Aluva's position on the Periyar river has made it a significant transit and commercial node connecting Kochi to the high ranges of Idukki.

Onam (August-September) is the most important community festival. The Periyar river is in full flood during the monsoon (June-September), making the river ghats dramatically scenic.
