Cherthala is the headquarters of Cherthala taluka in Alappuzha district of Kerala, a town on the backwaters known for its coir industry, rice cultivation and the spectacular backwater landscape of the Vembanad Lake region. The town is part of Kerala's backwater country, where life is intimately connected to the network of lakes, canals, rivers and lagoons that create one of the most distinctive human geographies in the world. The coir industry, which weaves coconut fibre into rope, mats and other products, has been a traditional occupation of the Cherthala region for generations.
Cherthala and the broader Alappuzha region are famous for the Kuttanad agricultural system, where paddy is cultivated on land that is below sea level, protected by a system of bunds (earthen embankments) from the surrounding water. This unique agricultural system, described as the paddy fields below sea level, is one of the most extraordinary agricultural engineering achievements in Bharat and has been recognised as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the FAO.
Cherthala railway station on the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram line. NH-66 road connectivity. Boat services on the backwaters to Alappuzha and Kottayam. Approximately 35 km from Ernakulam.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha (August, Onam season) is one of Kerala's most spectacular sporting and cultural events, and the backwaters of Cherthala's region are most beautiful around this period. Onam (August-September) is the most important community festival with the boat race as its centrepiece. The monsoon (June-September) fills the backwaters and the paddy fields with water.
