Kollam is one of Kerala's most historically significant cities and an important port on the Lakshadweep Sea, known since ancient times as Quilon or Desinganadu, a major trading port in the spice and pepper trade that connected Malabar to the Arab world, China and Europe. The city has the distinction of being mentioned in the accounts of Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta and Fa Hien, speaking to its importance as one of the great medieval trading ports of Asia. Kollam is the headquarters of Kollam district and the headquarters of the Cashew Capital of the World designation, processing more cashews than any other city in Bharat and serving a significant share of global cashew consumption.
Kollam (Quilon) was one of the most important ports in medieval Asia, the terminus of the Arab trading vessels that brought the world's demand for Kerala pepper. The Kollam Era (Kollam Andu) dating from 825 CE was the traditional calendar of the Travancore region, showing the city's historical significance as a centre of civilisation. The cashew processing industry, established in Kollam in the 19th century, has made the city the global capital of this trade.
Kollam Junction is a major railway station on the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram line. NH-66 road connectivity. Boat services to Alappuzha along the famous backwater route. Approximately 70 km from Thiruvananthapuram.
Onam (August-September) is the most important community celebration. The Ashtamudi Lake backwaters are most scenic post-monsoon. The cashew processing industry peaks during the harvest season (February-May) when raw cashews are processed. Christmas is celebrated with enthusiasm by the significant Christian community. The Kerala Boat Race season activates the backwaters in August.
