North Kolkata was the Bengali aristocratic quarter where zamindars, merchants and intellectuals of the Bengal Renaissance built their mansions and established the traditions of Durga Puja patronage, theatre, music and the literary movement that produced Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Swami Vivekananda from adjacent neighbourhoods.
