📍 About this Locality

Serampore (Srirampur) is a town on the Hooghly bank that was a Danish pre-independence era settlement (Frederiksnagore) from 1755 to 1845, remembered chiefly as the site of the Serampore Mission where William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward established the mission press in 1800 that translated the Bible and other texts into dozens of Asian languages. Serampore College (1818), now a deemed university, was the first modern degree-granting college in Asia.

📜 Historical Roots

William Carey and the Serampore Trio chose the Danish enclave deliberately because Danish law allowed the missionary work the East India Company restricted. The Serampore Mission Press, printing in Bengali, Sanskrit, Urdu and 40 other languages, helped standardise Bengali script and print culture, contributing to the Bengal Renaissance and modern Indian literacy.
