📍 About this Locality

Suri is the headquarters of Birbhum district, a district of extraordinary cultural depth as the homeland of the Baul tradition, the mystical singing saints of Bengal whose ecstatic devotional songs (fusing Sufi and Vaishnava traditions) have been awarded UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Birbhum also contains the Tarapith temple (one of the most important tantric shrines in Bharat) and is close to Shantiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore ashram and the Biswa-Bharati University.

Birbhum was historically associated with radical Shakta traditions and the Baul movement, which arose as a rejection of caste and religious orthodoxy through mystical singing and ecstatic devotion. The Bauls, carrying their ektara and begging bowl, are the supreme symbol of Bengal humane spirituality.
