📍 About this Locality

Bolpur-Shantiniketan is one of the most culturally sacred places in Bharat and the world, the home of Rabindranath Tagore ashram and the Visva-Bharati University (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2023), which the Nobel laureate built as an open-air learning institution connecting Bengali culture, Indian classical traditions and international humanism. Tagore composed the national anthems of both Bharat and Bangladesh. The Visva-Bharati, established in 1921, had students including Indira Gandhi and Satyajit Ray.

📜 Historical Roots

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) established the ashram school Shantiniketan (abode of peace) at Bolpur, expanding it in 1921 into Visva-Bharati (the world university), his vision of an institution at the crossroads of Indian civilisation and world knowledge. The university, now a central university and UNESCO heritage site, continues Tagore vision of education as a liberating creative experience.

Basanta Utsav (Holi at Shantiniketan, February-March) is the most visually spectacular event when students in yellow clothes shower each other with flowers and colours. The Poush Mela (December, Tagore ashram founding) is the most beloved gathering. The Rabindra Jayanti (May, Tagore birthday) fills the ashram with celebrations.
