📍 About this Locality

Malda is the headquarters of Malda district in northern West Bengal, a city famous above all for the Malda mango, particularly the Himsagar and Fazli varieties, whose extraordinary flavour has made Malda mangoes the most sought-after in eastern Bharat and internationally. Malda is also the gateway to Gaur and Pandua, the twin ruined capitals of the medieval Bengal Sultanate, whose spectacular mosque and palace ruins spread over a vast area represent one of Bharat most underappreciated heritage landscapes.

📜 Historical Roots

Gaur (ancient Lakshmanavati) was one of the greatest cities of medieval eastern Bharat, capital of the Bengal Sultanate and briefly of the Sur empire, whose ruins extend across 32 square kilometres. The Bengal Sultanate architecture at Gaur and Pandua represents a unique chapter in the history of Indian Islamic architecture.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The mango season (May-July) is the supreme economic event when the Himsagar and Fazli varieties fill the markets. Durga Puja is the major festival. The Gaur heritage ruins are most comfortably visited November-February.
